PROF. Dr. Mário Carlos Beni:A LIFE DEDICATED TO TOURISM AND EDUCATION
With a distinguished academic and professional career in the field of Tourism, Professor Doctor Mário Carlos Beni is recognized in Brazil and abroad as one of the leading names in the sector. A tireless researcher, he developed the main analysis tool for the sector, the Tourism System - SISTUR.
EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC CAREER
Born in São Paulo Capital, on April 14, 1938, to a family originally from Casa Branca, a municipality in the interior of São Paulo, Mário Carlos Beni graduated in Civil Engineering from Mackenzie University and in Law from the Fluminense Federal University. He worked in academia for over 40 years, having achieved the highest degree of qualification an academic can reach: Full Professor, currently retired from ECA/USP. The Professor holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from ECA/USP; Master in Sociology and Politics from the School of Sociology and Politics of the University of São Paulo (USP). He was a visiting professor at several stricto sensu postgraduate programs in Tourism and Hospitality in Brazil and abroad.
DEDICATION TO TOURISM
Tourism has been present in Mário Carlos Beni's life since 1971, marking his return to Academia. In parallel, the Professor played an important role in various sectors of Tourism: he was Director of Planning and President of Paulistur; he participated as Coordinator of several Tourism-related projects in Brazil; he was a Delegate, representing the Americas, on the Ethics Committee of the World Tourism Organization - UNWTO; he was an Effective Member of the National Tourism Council; he was President of CENTur - National Council of Tourism Entities of CNTur.
ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTIONS
The year 1971 marked the return of Prof. Dr. Mário Carlos Beni to Academia, as a Voluntary Teaching Assistant, research activities, in the discipline of "Urban and Territorial Planning", at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism - FAU/USP. In the same year he participated in a contest for the discipline "Tourism and Development", at ECA/USP. From then on, Tourism definitively entered the life of Mário Carlos Beni. In 1972, the Ministry of Education and Culture - MEC, accredited him as the First Regent Professor of the disciplines "Theory and Technique of Tourism" and "Planning and Organization of Tourism". A tireless researcher, he developed the main analysis tool for the sector: the Tourism System - SISTUR. He was responsible for the creation of Stricto Sensu postgraduate courses in the main educational institutions in Brazil.
RECOGNITION AND HONORS
Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Mário Carlos Beni has received, and continues to receive, several tributes, awards and recognition for his work in Tourism and Education. Highlights include: the "TOURISM - AWARD 2004" award - ANFORHT WORLD Tourism Forum 2004, in Antalya - Turkey; elected in 2011 to occupy chair No. 6 of the Brazilian Academy of Events and Tourism; the Scientific Merit Medal - Rector Virvi Ramos Medal - Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the University of Caxias do Sul - Caxias do Sul - RS; in 2022 the Prof. Mário Beni Award was instituted, which will honor those who stand out in the sector in the year; in 2024 he received the highest honor granted by the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, the Collar of Honor to Legislative Merit for his work in Education.
LEGACY AND INSPIRATION
To all my students, fellow teachers and researchers, especially to political colleagues and public, private and third sector managers. The ever-present memory of multicultural education that constitutes the direction that must be taken in the rapidly globalized educational process. The great objective is to always remember and prevent the globalization process from leading to homogenization, the result of which will be the submission and even extinction of various cultural expressions. Just as biodiversity is essential for the evolution of the creative potential of all humanity. New ways of thinking and expression can only result from a dynamic of cultural encounters.
